Excursion to Mazatlán Centro

My first excursion to El Centro in Mazatlán produced some new impressions of the city.

I live in Sábalo Country which is the northern extension of the Golden Zone. Sábalo Country has many hotels along the beach, tiendas (shops) catering to the beach tourist’s needs and all manner of restaurants. And construction of new condo high-rises everywhere.

El Centro shows a different side of Mexico: older buildings, plazas with the traditional kiosko (gazebo), old churches, mercados (street markets), museums and a theatre… It has the traditional character of a Mexican town that I was expecting.

All the while there are buildings that seem to be falling apart with holes in the roof. The sidewalks are riddled with treacherous holes, slopes and steps. Renovations and construction in existing buildings are ubiquitous and can easily be observed with no barriers in place.

It is a living city that is changing like every other city, with beautiful corners and ugly ones. It has character.

This was a very short excursion for first impressions only… more exploring will need to be done. But here are a few photos to share the experience:
