Bucharest – Farmers Market

Today, I went to a local farmers market in the Drumul Taberei neighbourhood with a Romanian friend. There were stands with fresh produce and homemade preserves, homemade wine in 2l plastic bottles, Greek olives, sheep skins and fox furs, fresh and smoked meats and cheeses, breads and desserts, and a grill station where you could get a snack.

We had some mititei (“mici”), which is a traditional Romanian grilled skinless sausage, and a grilled kebab with young mutton meat. We were sitting in the sun, eating, and my friend struck up a conversation with the guy we shared the table with.

I managed to buy some smoked cheese from a stand with my few words of Romanian, and the vendor even gave me a sample to try. My friend also bought fermented cabbage and cauliflower in a big jar, a dried and cured lamb sausage and some other things. It’s all delicious. At the olive stand, we were able to try several kinds of olives before she decided which ones she wanted to buy. So different from Vancouver.

I was glad to have my friend with me, though. I bought some strawberries for 15 lei with her help, and a minute later, we saw a lady (foreigner like me) being told the same strawberries were 20 lei. So, there are local prices and prices for foreigners, apparently. Gotta be careful.

I generally love farmers markets, so this was a great experience, a lovely day.

  1. Ha I beat whoever is your other faithful commenter! Looks fantastic! Fresh olives not even siting in oil! I now how much you love a farmers market. I think Romania will suit you better than Mexico. Eventhough I am sure you liked Mexico. No sun burns here!
