San José del Cabo – Downtown (Centro)

On my excursion to Centro in San José del Cabo, I was searching for the typical Mexican plaza with church or cathedral and gazebo. Every Mexican town has this arrangement from what I’ve seen so far, and my expectation wasn’t disappointed when I found Plaza Mijares. Well, I’ll be honest, compared to the plazas in Mazatlan and even Puerto Vallarta (not to speak of Guadalajara and Mexico City, of course), I was not that impressed with this one—it seemed like a concrete desert to me.

Speaking of desert, I am rather intrigued by the landscape here – very arid, sandy, tropical desert. There are, of course, cacti and palms in Sinaloa and Jalisco as well, but here they just seem so appropriate for what one imagines in Mexico based on the little exposure via TV one might have had. Desert or not, it is January now, and I’ll have to say that it’s not very warm except in the sun. It’s cool at night, and even during the day in the shade, I am not quite comfortable in my sleeveless tops. That did not prevent the sun from burning my face badly, so the sun is deceiving.

Back to Centro, I walked by an art gallery with a tall angel sculpture in front. And there are many restaurants and bars here, a few lovely streets as you can see on the photos. I imagine if one wants to eat well and party on vacations, this is the spot to be. I did find pretty good tacos (2 for 72 pesos) just a little further west, and I enjoyed those even better than the ones I’d had a couple days earlier at a restaurant for over double the price. It’s hard to beat the places where the locals go.

  1. Short and sweet this week. You went to NewYork to the Statue of Liberty a second time with out me!! You need to do the currency conversion for us. I am not sure if you paid $0.30/tacos or $5/taco. Glad they were tasty too! After that thing I sent you, have you tried a cervaza?
